on Friday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has suspended the notification of the ban on showing Imran Khan’s speech live.

The Islamabad High Court on Wednesday suspended the notification of the ban on showing Imran Khan’s speech live on TV and ordered to give an explanation. The government announced last week that YouTube and other social media platforms had been banned from broadcasting clips of his political speeches, claiming it would prevent supporters from using them for militant purposes.

The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday suspended the notification of the ban on showing Imran Khan’s speech live, following which it emerged that the media block would be lifted if no order was passed by 13:30pm. The court made the announcement after hearing a petition by concerned parties and sending it to a commission for further action.

The government claims that it was given to give people an “opportunity” to watch the prime minister’s address, but in doing so they are infringing on his privacy by broadcasting his words. Many argue this is a way of silencing dissenters.
